| Hi guys,
I'll keep this brief - I have finished building and testing a completely reworked email system for VectorStar. Key improvements are: 1. better sanity checks, blocking blatant spam and invalid messages from ever entering the server 2. Automatic system-wide spam filtering, using SpamAssassin. We can do system-wide bayesian filtering too, but at this point I don't think we'll use it. 3. User-specific bayesian filtering. Just click on one checkbox and the system does it all for you! In case you don't know, bayesian filtering is a smart filter that compares a new email to your known-good and known-bad messages to determine if it's good or not. The filter learns from each email you get and becomes more accurate over time. 4. Automatic delivery of spam to a "spam" folder. Also configurable to auto-delete, deliver to a different folder, or bounce back to sender. 5. Our old keyword filter is still there too. It doesn't need to be turned on or off anymore, and follows the same delivery rules as other spam messages. Now for the question I know you're dying to know: When will it go live?? The answer is.... soon, but not today. Probably not this weekend. Probably mid-to-late next week. I'll say that it'll be live by August 1. | It's official - the totally revamped mail system is live!
The only quirk I've found so far is that if you turn on your bayesian filter, most messages will get their subject rewritten twice... so a subject like: Look at these swiss watches! becomes: (SPAM Score: 20.3) (SPAM Score: 17.2) Look at these swiss watches! I haven't decided what I want to do about this quite yet. Still thinking....... | |
