Home Directories Missing again 2002-09-03 10:57:29
by lmbedore
This morning we discovered that 44 home directories were missing again.

I went through and found all the missing directories, and then restored them from last night's 4am backup. I'm still not certain when or why the 44 home directories disappeared. I'll be scouring logs the rest of the day to see if I can come up with some idea of what went on.

This sort of thing is REALLY frustrating when we're SO close to having our new servers up and running, with better hardware, newer filesystems, and newer core system utilities. With any luck, we'll make it until the upgrades without any further troubles.

First step: Upgrade quota utilities. Quota buffers alone were eating about 90mb RAM. We upgraded from quota-utils 1.70 to 3.06, rescanned the quotas, and now we're using about 30mb RAM for quota management. We're hoping the problem was due to the quota tools.

Well, keep up the good work...I guess.

Must suck to be you, Chris. E-mail Frank... he can give you an account if you have an urgent need.

Hehehe, Sirius, you are truly evil. :)

If I had to guess, I'd say that's a blatant lie. But hey, I could be wrong.

You're a quick one, kid.

Thanks for the double confirmation on the painfully obvious.

Hey, don't sweat it. We're making some good progress on getting the new hardware going. Toby and I managed to get the FastTrak RAID cards to work by sort of engineering our own MBR for our RAID arrays. :)

We will be doing further development on our SuperTrak driver so we can get the new ungodly file server running. The bad news is that I have to sacrifice the motherboard out of my workstation to get it going. Some crazy IRQ assignment issues with this card.

Once the new hardware's up, we get to finish our software development so we can open up signups. It kinda sucks being down to around 400 users. We haven't seen that number since September 2001. :(

Great news. I just wonder about one thing ... Despite Jason being listed as the "Hardware Guy", it's Laird who's been working his ass off testing the hardware.

Some say my kung fu is best. I say I don't even know kung fu. The answer is shrouded in mystery :)

Truth be told, if there's anything going on at VectorStar, 99 out of 100 times, I'm doing it. It's mainly a habit thing - it used to really just be me running the show, and it's a hard habit to break. I've been trying for a while to get everyone else involved, but it's tough. I think a lot more stuff will be done by other people once we get over the hurdle of having the new hardware working.

Plus, no matter how much we love Jason, I don't practically think he could have gotten the RAID cards working. All the problems have been on the extremely advanced side (modifying drivers, hacking the Linux kernel to oblivion, and PnP PCI specification complications that not even the vendor knows how to address, custom-writing our own boot sectors in ASM and binary). And though he could definitely knock the PCI spec problem in little time, he's not an experienced programmer or at the UNIX/Linux expertise level of Preston or myself. Hell, neither am I really... but that's why we have Preston around! :) He's been a very major part of getting these RAID cards working.

When it comes to hardware performance, specifications, getting it to function at most levels, that is me. When it comes to getting a driver in linux to function properly at the kernel level, that is definitely not me. I could do it with a pocket preston maybe, but unless I am writing "Hello World" in C, I will have major issues. I would have went with SCSI RAID anyway. IDE RAID is like cereal with no sugar, it sucks. :) *Just messin' with ya Laird*

Well, seems like you both know your stuff. Especially Laird! I can just imagine Laird having another sleepless night because of the hardware ...

I'd help out more, but according to the Contact Us page, I'm away at college having fun. Although I tend not to consider Calculus fun. Oh, and it's not as if I would be much help since I'm borderline Linux-illiterate. It's a good thing I'm having fun at college!

Calc is great. Wait till differential equations to start ripping on math!

If I were to show you my history with Math you'd understand why I don't like Calc. Math just doesn't make sense to me in all forms. Maybe I don't like it cause I'm not any good at it.

I believe it would be the both liquid and chunky campbells soup
