New Hardware on the way! 2002-07-29 20:45:27
by lmbedore
I may be broke now, but at least we have new hardware! I ordered a slew of new equipment tonight, which will get us in line to have:
  • hardware RAID on all servers (other than DNS)
  • about 220 useable gigs of main file space for user home directories, protected by RAID
  • A dedicated file server (PII 266)
  • A dedicated web server (dual xeon 400)
  • A dedicated mail server (dual xeon 450)
  • Another server to do 'other stuff', like FTP (dual PII-266)
  • A PIII-1ghz machine we don't know what to do with yet
  • Oh yeah, a firewall too.
In other words, all those big hardware upgrades we've talked about for ages are finally really happening. Special thanks goes out to Dustin, Vrolok, Ash, and Toby for their donations which have helped pay for this stuff!

Laird, you're the bomb-diggity. I promise to scrape up some money when I'm no longer a poor college student and actually give.

Plz tell me you bought some rack mount cases (or have them) too. :)

Perhaps you should use that P3 for a streaming audio server or something like that. I know my idea is lame, but it's still an idea.

Rack mount cases? Why would we need them when we can just slap together something from cardboard boxes and elmers glue for just a few dollars. We'll spray paint the cardboard black though, so we can try to keep up with the dark color theme. :)

We figured we'd just leave all the hardware running on top of that stack of paper towels you got in the corner.

Frank, you had to go back to the paper towels, didn't you?

Of course!

Don't worry, sirius... all 4 x86 boxes will be in 4U black rackmount cases. The Sparc's will stay as they are, though I'm going to look for a center-mount tray for them to sit on. I think there's an extra one upstairs at work.

I think Frank is thinking about rack mounting the towels.

Rack mounting the towels might be a good idea. They'd be very accessible in case of any liquid spills. You never know when you might be enjoying a frosty beverage and you accidently spill some. Having those paper towels mounted in an easy to reach place could be useful.

Posts regarding the new hardware has made the message board really pick up recently, I like that!

The process required for account signups to start up again is simple:

1. New Hardware and Network Architecture Updates (we're doing this NOW, obviously)
2. Administration Software (this is in the works. we put it on hold because we realized we needed to do number 1 first!)
3. flip a few switches and let signups flow.

Also... On the Usefulness of Towels... I'd definitely recommend rackmounting the towels!

So does this mean we can use sendmail cgi's now/again? Or do we need to wait for software writing...

Once the new servers are put into place, Toby and I will be working on a means of allowing CGI's/PHP scripts to send mail via the sendmail routine. We've got a solution that appears to work, but we're going to make some changes to the code and do a lot of testing before we open it up to be used system-wide.
We'll probably do one of two things: Allow mail to be sent ONLY to local users, or restrict the number of emails that can be sent through the mechanism. Doing the restriction is more difficult than it sounds, but that's what we're hoping to implement.
